Character Analysis

1. Who Am I? Who is your character? Identify all the details: name, age, physical traits, education, personal opinions, likes, dislikes, fears, ethics, beliefs, etc.
My name is Analyn Ortega but you can call me “Analyn” for short. I am already 40 years old but I do think that age is just a number. My political stand? I am a pro-Duterte. If someone will object, just respect my opinion. One of my fears came to me, that my son will be taken away from me. He was like my “everything”.

2. What time is it? The year, the season, the day, the minute. What is the significance of that time?
It is the year 2018. It has been 2 years since Duterte has been elected as the 16th president of the Philippines. It’s the time of the day when lunchtime is over and we’re taking our “siesta”, a break in the afternoon. It’s also been about a year since my son, Buboy, was killed.

3. Where am I? Identify the country, the city or town, the neighborhood, building, room, or where in that room are you?
I am currently living in the Philippines, in the City of Quezon. The environment where I am currently living can be described as close to a “slum area”. I am working in a cafeteria.

4. What surrounds me? What is happening in the environment surrounding you? What's the weather? Landscape? People? Objects?
Usually, the noontime around the day has the highest temperature. There is a high chance that the weather or temperature is hot. Around me are my co-workers at the cafeteria. This is where I work (cafeteria). With that, I am surrounded by food, plates, utensils, chairs, tables, and the cashier.

5. What are the given circumstances? Identify events in the past, present, and future: What has happened? What is happening? What is going to happen?
In the past, my son, Buboy was unjustly killed by policemen. A lot of reporters came to our place as soon as it was reported. I’ve been crying out and standing up for my son. He had no choice because of our financial situation, and yet he still changed for the better. But the police still killed him. Currently, a few people invite me for an interview. Currently, I am being interviewed by students. The future? I am quite uncertain but I do hope that these students can be the way for the president to hear my voice.

6. What are my relationships? More than just your relationship with and with other people, it's your relationship with objects, characters, events, etc.
What do I feel about the past? I won’t deny that Buboy used drugs, but I know that he was open to changing his life. I feel frustrated as reality always tells me of our financial situation. If only Buboy didn’t use drugs in order to work in the construction to have money for our everyday lives. I would rather work more than 18 hours a day as long as I still have my son with me. Ever since Buboy showed up to me right before I got his body, I cannot say a word. I was speechless and felt so much regret for not being able to do more than what I can. I wish I can change things from the past. But sadly, I can't. I'd just fight and never stop until my son gets the justice that he deserves. My relationship with the media/reporters are not that good. They were asking too many questions and at some point, they always bring a feeling that still haunts me. What I feel towards the president, is that I am still hoping that he will listen to me. I still believe that he will fulfill his promises to the nation. I am trying my best to stop myself from having an outburst whenever I remember who killed my son – the police. My son may be wrong for using drugs from the past, but that doesn’t make him entirely a bad person. I do really wish that the policemen would go behind the bars once I knew who were those who killed my dearest son.
What I feel towards my son is that I truly love him. He is very precious to me. At some point I feel sad for not being able to stop him from talking to the police. What if he didn’t approach them? What if he stayed with me? But no, he was not selfless. He became a hero for sacrificing himself.

7. What do I want? What do you want right here, right now? What does your character want overall: an ultimate want?
I want to know who were the policemen who killed my son. I have no power to bring back Buboy to my arms but what I can do is get the justice that he deserves and that is what I truly want.
8. What is in my way? What obstacles keep you from getting or achieving what you want?
No one’s been listening to me ever since the day my son died. Not literally listening since it’s given that the media interviewed me ever since the news about Buboy’s death was reported to them. What I meant is that it was painted in our image that we are bad citizens. I know it’s not right to use drugs, but we really had no choice. Even if we worked two times, or even thrice the effort a day as much as the rich, our savings are not that enough. The bad image painted to us and our financial situation became a barrier and a step farther from getting the justice we deserve.

9. What do I do to get what I want? What actions do you take - verbally, physically, both? What tactics do you implement?

Right now, I am requesting that the students right in front of me would help me reach my message to Mr. President Duterte. The piece of paper that I have in my pocket, I hope it reaches him. It’s no use that the media reporters would ask me questions and show my face on the Television, people would just spit out hate.
